Student Organization Policies
Shenandoah University prohibits encouraging, facilitating, or allowing hazing by any organization or individual. The Student Code of Conduct includes sections on Hazing but may also be pursued by the Office of Student Leadership and Engagement if it does not reach the level of a conduct violation.
Hazing is defined as “any action or situation requiring inappropriate behavior, creating an atmosphere of servitude or allowing potentially dangerous, demeaning, humiliating, ridiculing, or degrading activities regardless of intent or consent of the participant(s), by a group or a member of a group on an individual as a part of membership or initiation.”
Enacted in Virginia in 2022, Adam’s Law was created to strengthen institutional policies and education around hazing and requires all colleges and universities to post on their website all reports of violations of anti-hazing policies and laws.
To review Shenandoah’s hazing policy, please visit the Non-Academic Policies in the institution catalog.
- Spring 2023: Zero (0) violations of the University’s Hazing Policy, or of federal or state laws pertaining to hazing.
- Fall 2022: Zero (0) violations of the University’s Hazing Policy, or of federal or state laws pertaining to hazing.

As student-led organizations, all student organizations must adhere to the Code of Conduct. In addition, Shenandoah University recommends student organizations participate only in events and activities directly related to the purpose of the organization, and avoid participating in high risk events or activities of any kind. If student organizations are interested in pursuing high risk activities, officers should work through the Shenandoah Outdoor and Adventure Recreation program for information on best practices, and should only work through reputable contracted providers where proper training and insurance is provided since insurance will not be available through the university. Student organizations that engage in group activities that may be considered high risk should have in place protocol for such activities and should use waivers. Examples of high risk activities includes but are not limited to:
Bungee jumping
Climbing walls
Diving
High Ropes
Rafting
Skiing
SkyDiving
Spelunking
